The centre of Portugal has some of the country’s finest beaches, very many of its major monuments, wonderful scenery and yet it remains, as yet, largely undiscovered. The Romans described the centre of Portugal as the Garden of Eden.

Much of central Portugal is covered with lush, green and beautiful mountain scenery and has a temperate climate. It lacks the extremes of temperature of Spain and you can usually sleep at night, even in summer.

Broadly speaking, we work along the Costa de Prata coastline between Caldas de Rainha and Figueira da Foz and inland from Tomar up to Condeixa, taking in the larger market towns of Leiria, Alvaiazere, Pombal and Ansiao. These towns are more or less geographically in the centre of the country, so access north to Porto, south to Lisbon, west to the beaches and east to Spain is convenient. The south of our region is within 40 minutes drive of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital and the northern edge of the region is within 20 minutes of Coimbra, Portugal’s third city and home to its oldest university. There are a number of sites of historical interest, including the world renowned medieval walled town of Obidos and the well preserved ruined Roman city of Conimbriga.

Rainfall in the Coimbra area is around 35 degrees, but it is normally concentrated into two rainy seasons (mid-October to early December and mid April to early June). Incessant grey skies are rare.
